Si hubiera de representar líricamente la actividad profesional a la que he dedicado no pocos años, el periodismo de opinión, acudiría a un haiku de Basho que dice más o menos lo siguiente: Gustosamente venderé, queridos comerciantes de la ciudad, mi sombrero cargado de nieve. Lo mío, lo nuestro, es poco más que eso. Nada menos que eso. Son malos tiempos para el comercio en general, y lo son particularmente para el comercio de sombreros con nieve y de nieve con sombreros.
A lo largo de treinta años de relación con la prensa le he dicho más de un adiós, pues una ha tenido la inclinación de hacer tabla rasa más a menudo de lo que es prudente, pero siempre, y siempre por obra del azar, he vuelto a ella. Uno acaba por aceptar lo inevitable y hoy pienso que escribiré mientras pueda hacerlo y que escribiré en la prensa mientras me deje un hueco. En ese quehacer me encontrarán, y me encontrarán en el mismo lugar, quienes quieran encontrarme, por supuesto. Donde no me hallarán es en las tertulias radiofónicas en las que he venido participando. Puede que acuda alguna vez; esa es, al menos, mi voluntad.
Yo lamento esta vuelta del camino, y por más razones que las evidentes, aunque ésas, desde luego, son de peso. Admito que no me había ocupado de la radio hasta que estuve en ella. Para mí, la prensa –y todo cuanto tenía valor- era escrito. Pero he apreciado la radio cuando he entrado en sus cocinas y he degustado su encanto doméstico, de andar por casa. Las tertulias políticas son, y por eso son atractivas, ensayos permanentes y con frecuencia fallidos. A veces, sale lo peor, que es patente, y a veces, lo mejor, que es indefinible. Hay en ellas solos excepcionales, como hay ruidos, disonancias, repeticiones y silencios, pero así es el juego. Yo lo echaré de menos.
